Severely sight impaired (registered blind)
If you didn't know already, I am registered blind (officially termed "severely sight impaired"). I was born with this visual impairment but was officially registered in November 1988 with the Huntingdonshire Society for the Blind, after an ophthalmologist issued a Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI).
My visual disability is made up of a combination of conditions, each affecting my sight in different ways and contributing to how I experience the world visually.
My Conditions
Together, these conditions affect visual clarity, focus, eye stability, and sensitivity to light.
Understanding My Conditions
Congenital Cataracts
Congenital cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens present from birth.
This limits how clearly light enters the eye, resulting in blurred or reduced vision from an early stage of life.
Hypermetropia (Long-sightedness)
Hypermetropia affects my ability to focus on close objects.
Even with corrective lenses, tasks like reading or working at a screen can require additional effort and concentration.
Inherited Aniridia
Aniridia is a rare genetic condition where the iris is completely absent.
This reduces the eye’s ability to regulate light, impacting visual sharpness and contributing to significant light sensitivity.
Nystagmus
Nystagmus causes involuntary eye movements, which can make it difficult to maintain steady focus.
This affects depth perception and the ability to track objects or read text smoothly.
Photophobia (Light Sensitivity)
Photophobia means I am highly sensitive to bright light and glare.
Certain lighting conditions can be uncomfortable or disorienting, and managing light levels is an important part of my daily routine.
How This Affects My Daily Life
My vision is significantly reduced and can vary depending on lighting, contrast, and environment.
Everyday activities - such as reading, navigating unfamiliar places, or using digital devices - can require additional time, planning, or adaptation. Bright environments, low contrast, or visual clutter can make tasks more challenging.
However, I have developed effective strategies to adapt and work efficiently in both personal and professional settings.
Tools & Technology I Use
To support my independence and productivity, I regularly use a range of accessibility tools and assistive technologies, including:
These tools allow me to access information, communicate, and work effectively across different environments.
Independence & Perspective
Living with a visual impairment has shaped how I approach challenges. It has strengthened my problem-solving skills, adaptability, and attention to detail.
I am fully independent and confident in using technology, learning new systems, and navigating both digital and real-world environments.
Rather than being a limitation, my disability has helped me develop resilience and a unique perspective that I bring into everything I do.
Final Note
My goal is always to focus on what can be achieved. With the right tools, mindset, and approach, I continue to work, learn, and engage with the world on my own terms.
